With two pristine sandy beaches, scenic walking trails, and a vibrant hotspot for swimmers and watersports enthusiasts, Hope Cove could easily be mistaken for a Mediterranean gem. Yet, this tranquil haven is nestled in the heart of Devon, UK.

Offering a serene escape from the fast pace of everyday life, Hope Cove attracts visitors from across the country—and beyond—every year. Its charm lies not only in its natural beauty but also in the warm hospitality provided by its few, carefully selected hotels.

Perched on the cliffside with a breathtaking view of Harbour Beach, The Cottage Hotel stands as one of the area’s finest gems. Most of its rooms boast stunning sea views, and diners are treated to spectacular sunsets over the water. With direct beach access and the option to indulge in Devon’s famous cream teas on the terrace, it’s easy to see why this establishment, which first opened as a hotel in 1927, has thrived for nearly a century.

In recent years, The Cottage Hotel has adapted to new demands, including the growing trend toward electric vehicles (EVs). With the UK Government forecasting up to 11 million EVs on the roads by 2030, accommodating this shift has become essential for businesses catering to modern travellers.

We spoke with Neil Slade, General Manager of The Cottage Hotel, about the hotel’s decision to install EV chargers.

“We realised it was time to consider offering EV charging,” says Neil. “Guests were frequently asking about it, and there weren’t any other charging options nearby.”

After researching various providers, Neil and his team decided to partner with Forward EV.

“Andrew Oakes, Forward EV’s Director, reached out to us,” Neil explains. “He clearly outlined what they could offer, and I appreciated his straightforward, no-nonsense approach. It all seemed simple.”

So far, the decision has paid off. Having an EV charger on-site has become a key selling point for potential guests, who often enquire about the availability of charging before booking their stay. In addition, the hotel has seen an increase in day visitors—people stopping by for lunch on the terrace while their vehicles charge. This has opened two new revenue streams: the charging service itself, and the additional business from guests passing through.

Looking ahead, Neil is optimistic.

“Yes, we’re definitely considering adding more chargers in the future. The demand has been steady, and it’s been a great addition.”

If you’re dreaming of a visit to Devon’s stunning coastline, The Cottage Hotel awaits—offering not just a peaceful getaway, but now the convenience of EV charging as well. You can visit their website here – https://hopecove.com/
